The Bottom Line
What We Loved
- Location: In the Summit Mall, walking distance to a movie theater, Trader Joe's, Starbucks, and several restaurants. Close to Mt Rose, it is a good base for those wanting to hit the slopes.
- Cleanliness: Overall the room was clean & smelled new. However, there were already a few scuff marks on the furniture.
- Value: Booked a "Members Save More" rate of $115 per night plus $15 of taxes. Day of check-in the rate for the same room was $169 per night plus $22 in taxes.
- Wifi: The speed test showed 90 Mbps, which is very fast however streaming to TV from Chromecast was glitchy & slow throughout our stay.
- Pool: The hotel has a nice indoor pool & hot tub, however, it was closed for maintenance with no information was provided about reopening day.
- Parking: Plethra of free self-parking available.
What We Didn't Like
- Hotel Service: Front desk agent seemed disinterested. When we walked into the hotel they were chatting with another employee. She asked for my name, however, she did not check my ID, validate my credit card nor was my Globalist status recognized. She didn't ask how many keys I wanted (she just made two) and then directed us to the elevator. No information was provided about the hotel amenities including the gym, the pool (which was closed for maintenance) or breakfast location or hours. I was not provided information about check-out time or asked if I had any questions.
- TV: It seems like the hotel is running a dish as there were static in the channels (see photos).
- Hotel Gym: While the gym has ample equipment (3 treadmills, 1 Peloton & free weights), there seemed to be a ventilation problem as it was very hot. A small portable fan in the corner did not help at all.
- Security: Keycard not needed to access guest floors, a security issue.
- Walls are thin, we could hear our neighbors sneeze & hallway chatter.
The Verdict
We found the Hyatt Place South Reno to be a bit of a mixed bag, but leaning towards positive with a few caveats. The location was fantastic for us, with easy access to shopping, dining, and the ski resorts. We also appreciated the affordable "Members Save More" rate and the clean environment throughout the hotel. The free parking was a nice bonus too!
However, we were disappointed that the service was lacking, particularly at the front desk where we encountered a rather disinterested agent. We also weren't given any information about the amenities, and to our surprise, the pool was closed without any prior notice. The Wi-Fi was advertised as high-speed, but we found it to be quite glitchy. The gym was uncomfortably hot, and we had some concerns about security with the elevator access.
Ultimately, we think it depends on what you're looking for in a hotel. If location and value are your top priorities, and you're willing to overlook some shortcomings in service and amenities, then it could be a decent choice. But if you're hoping for a seamless and well-rounded experience with attentive service and fully functional amenities, you might want to consider other options.
