The Bottom Line

What We Loved

  • Great location across the street from Millennium Park and the Art Institute of Chicago.
  • Great staff: we entered from the side entrance & staff helped us get to the lobby (2nd floor). The front desk staff was very friendly & informative. The assistant front office manager promptly contacted us about an issue.
  • Large bathroom with double vanity!
  • Comfy bed & Chromecast-equipped TV.
  • Shake Shack is located on the ground floor (available for in-room dining). Note: be aware of incessant long lines.
  • Large gym with tons of equipment including C2 rower.

What We Didn't Like

  • Floodlights outside our room resulted in light-emitting into the room above the blackout curtains.
  • Windows needed to be pressured clean, there were several spider webs across the three windows.
  • The half-shower door caused a bit of flooding after each shower.
  • No coffee machine in the room (available in lobby)
  • No ice machine available (requested & was brought a ziplock bag of ice)

The Verdict

We used a @hyatt free night certificate for this stay. This category 4 hotel requires 15k points (nonpeak) and ranged between $200 - $500/night. With such a central location & great staff, we would definitely visit again.

Overnight stay at Chicago Athletic Hotel in a King Millennium View room. TL;DR great hotel close to Chicago Bean (or Cloud, if you call it that).

Normally we've flown to O'Hare when visiting Chicago; on this trip we flew to Midway and now I see why the locals prefer Midway. In the future, definitely making it a point to fly Midway over O'Hare, whenever possible. The ease of it when compared to the chaos of O'Hare is unmatched.

Upon landing, we walked for about 20 minutes to catch the Orange Line train to the hotel. Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is running a sale on public transportation tickets until Labor Day 2021, saving us 50% on an all day pass ($5 per person, versus $10).

After a 45 minute train ride, we walked down to the street from the platform & walked one block to the side entrance of the hotel. Upon entering a gentleman pushing a baggage cart welcomed us & ushered us to the stairs to the lobby.

Check-in was fast & easy. I used a Hyatt Free Night Certificate to book this stay & in the app saw we were assigned a room on the 19th floor. Because of my Hyatt Globalist status we were "upgraded" to a King Millennium View Room on the 6th floor. I asked if the 6th floor had good views (since I was originally assigned a 19th floor room) and was told the original room on the 19th floor was an interior facing room, with no view.

We took our keys & headed up to the corner room located right off the elevator. I loved the dark tones throughout the hotel: from the black room door to the walnut colors in the elevator, it was definitely a vibe. The King Room was large for its 270 square foot size. The bathroom was spacious with a gorgeous marble double vanity.

We dropped our bags & headed downstairs to grab something to eat from the Shake Shack located on the ground floor. There was a line of around 5 people in front of us, which gave us time to review the menu & make our selections. Note: over the course of the next 24 hours, there was always a line at Shake Shack, sometimes stretching into the "faux" lobby and nearly touching the hotel customer service desk located there o on the ground level.

Our wait for Shake Shack was around 25 minutes (line, ordering, waiting for food), which was not too bad. Next time will try the in room dining option to compare wait times. Once our food was ready, we headed back up to the room to eat before heading out to the Art Institute of Chicago across the street.

One thing I loved about this hotel was it's proximity to activities - we were able to walk from the hotel to the Art Institute as well as through Millennium Park to get to Navy Pier. Within walking distance is a Magnolia Bakery, Target along with no shortage of restaurants.

Breakfast was served in the "Drawing Room", located right off the check-in counter. Service was prompt & the food was good. My only complaint was that I ordered over-hard (fried) eggs and was given scrambled eggs. When I started I ordered over-hard eggs, the waiter told me they were over-hard scrambled (is that even a thing?). Not wanting to argue any further, I took the food.

As a Globalist, breakfast is complimentary, nonetheless, upon check-out why our bill did not have the breakfast charge listed, my credit card showed the charge. When I brought this up to the Assistant Front Office Manager Christina, she told me the charge would drop off after a few days. Noting that the two are separate and the charge hold is necessary. She went as far as emailing me the next day to confirm the matter was resolved.

Overall this was another great Hyatt stay in a nice hotel in one of our favorite cities.
